About

Curiosity and narrative

I’m from Concord, Massachusetts, a town that takes history and literature so seriously that it shuts down for revolutionary war reenactments once a year and people make pilgrimages to Authors Ridge to leave pencils on the graves of Emerson, Thoreau, and Louisa May Alcott. Growing up in that environment turned me into a reader and student before anything else (it secondarily turned me into a competent chicken farmer, but that has been less applicable to venture). As far back as I can remember, I read constantly and across everything, though often with a historical bent - classics, new journalism, historical memoirs, poetry. Books were the first place I went looking for the same things I chase now: understanding how we got to where we are, how things work, why people do what they do. Nothing has really changed. Curiosity around those questions eventually brought me to venture. Behind every company is a person with an idea that they believe in to a necessarily irrational degree before anyone else validates it. The work I love is understanding those stories and helping to pressure-test and strengthen them.

Reality distortion & running through walls

I look for founders building something disproportionately ambitious, whether seeking to redefine how an industry works or creating a category that doesn’t exist yet. The ability to envision something with no precedent and the conviction to push through and actualize it are rare and magnetic qualities. The founders I partner with tend to have unusual drive and an obsession with winning. My job is to meet that with the same intensity, directed at whatever they need. I try to overprepare, respect people’s time, and deliver beyond what I’ve promised.

The rest of the time

I’m an avid runner and recently did my first marathon in Florence. When I'm in the city you can find me walking on the West Side Highway, trying a new Pilates class, or playing backgammon in the Elizabeth Street Garden. When I’m outside of the city, I love to ski, hike, and generally spend time outdoors.
