About Sam

What is the first company you invested in? Do you have any anecdotes from when you first began working together?

Docker was my first deal. And what an incredible developer-focused company to start with! When we first started looking into Docker at the end of 2021, we were most impressed with the level of customer love from Docker users. I specifically remember speaking with one Docker power user who said he was happy to see Docker hit its stride commercially because “a healthy Docker is better for everyone in the community.” Beyond that, the rate of innovation by the Docker team and hyper-focus on serving developers is fantastic and exciting.

Do you have an investment ethos? Is there a portfolio company investment that exemplifies that ethos?

I enjoy taking a deeply technical approach to analyzing early-stage opportunities and look for businesses with technical differentiation creating a moat around their business. I get most excited when the founders marry their love of technology with deep empathy for technical practitioners, ensuring there exists a tangible purpose for the innovation.

What is a self-care ritual you practice?

Taking walks around San Francisco with my wife, visiting bakeries on Saturday mornings for chocolate almond croissants, and playing pickleball and basketball with friends.

What do you love about working for Bain Capital Ventures?

I appreciate the intellect and passion of my teammates, and I enjoy working hard to keep up with them every day. Each of them has  a deep understanding of technical trends and opportunities,  a hunger to be world-class  investors, and  an empathy and respect for operators having been in their shoes.

What are your interests and passions outside of BCV?

I love exploring San Francisco, skiing, coding on the weekends, the Giants/49ers, guitar, golf, pickleball, historical novels, and much more.
